Deceased Person : Kendrick Davis Saturday, March 14, 2015The family of Kendrick Davis would like to thank you for your sympathy.
Ken was a pleasure to work beside because of his positive approach to teaching, and to life in general. He helped me out on many occasions, and his laughter was medicinal. He was a true friend who would stand behind you all the way. And his mantra, "Don't worry, be happy," was written all over his face, and demeanor, and it rubbed off on everybody he met. It was a real joy to have known Ken.

Mr. Davis was so much more than my favorite drama teacher. He was an incredibly kind, generous and loving man. His cheery demeanour and deep joy for living came through in everything he did. I will never forget all the times he lost his glasses and then promptly found them atop his head :) He brought out something in me (my love of acting and theatre) that I will be forever grateful for. Thank you Mr. Davis for being a true light in this world. I'm sorry I will never get to be in your sweet presence again. My heart goes out to his beautiful family. Be well.

Ken was a wonderful gentleman and a pleasure to work beside for so many years...I was lucky to call him my friend. He had a love of life and a laugh that was infectious..I remember on many occasions we would make fun of his absent mindedness and he always knew we were doing this in love. I know you will have a special place in heaven for always thinking of others before yourself. We will definitely miss you..

My sincerest condolences to Ken's family and friends. Though I only met Ken a few times, his kindness, warmth, and joy of life shone through brilliantly. It was a pleasure sitting with him at the Board Retreat dinner last fall, he was great company! My prayers go out to Nicole and I will be there for you and your family if and when you need.

It was, an absolute pleasure to have Mr Davis as a teacher, drama coach and friend. He had the best attitude towards life and teaching. I could only wish that my children were to have been so lucky! I can hear his laugh now, and am sure he would want us to share a laugh over tears! I wish his family my best wishes!

It was such a pleasure to have taught with Ken for many years. Serving on OSSTF committees with him, I found him to be a true gentleman. He was a very positive person, always finding the good in people and situations. My sympathies go out to his family. He will truly be missed

Words are not enough to express how sorry I am for your loss. I have prayed to God to provide you the strength and courage you need in order to handle this difficult moment successfully. I have known Ken for many years and he was always the gentleman. He was indeed a great person and teacher. He always asked about our sons and how they were doing. He was very proud of all the students he had over the many years of teaching. He was an active member of our Retired Teachers group and one of his greatest acts while on the Executive was the poem he wrote for the families and staff of the children who lost their lives in the terrible shooting on Newtown. He will be missed by many of his friends and family in Canada and in Trinidad. Rest in peace my friend.

One definition of a gentleman is: "a man whose conduct conforms to a high standard of propriety or correct behaviour" --- ibid --- Ken Davis. Ken touched the minds and hearts of everyone he met -- family, students, teachers, friends and acquaintances. We will miss this "gentleman" for his caring and his contagious laugh. Our loss is heaven's gain. Rest in peace Ken.

"To Sir with Love"

I knew Ken as a friend and a caring and considerate person. His presence always provided a warm feeling of companionship, and to compliment his many qualities Ken always managed to throw in a few laughs to demonstrate his high spirits and great sense of humour. Ken will be sadly missed by all who knew him. To Nicole and family - please accept my heartfelt condolences in this time of sorrow. "What we have once enjoyed, we can never lose.

The ancient greeks, I'm told, didn't write obituaries. When loved ones passed on, they would simply ask one question: did the deceased live with passion? For Mr. Davis, there can only be one answer: YES. As my teacher and mentor, Mr. Davis showed me how to live one's life with passion, authenticity, and grace. He was beautiful, articulate, and genuinely concerned with everyone who crossed his path. His smile was infectious, and his words compelled our attention. For example, I will never forget how Mr. Davis often calmed us down at the start of class. In the midst of hormone-filled chaos (with teenagers fighting, cussing, or gossiping), he made a point of making eye contact with each of us, saying "thank you [name], thanks for that contribution." This was classic verbal judo at its best. We were accustomed to stern glares, loud ultimatums, or quick consequences from teachers -- the idea of being thanked for our rowdiness through us. We exchanged quizzical looks, and immediately focused on Mr. Davis. The room fell into his hands within moments. It was a brilliant strategy I often use in my own teaching at least once a semester. Then, of course, began Mr. Davis's ritual (and public) search for his reading glasses. I never understood if this was purposeful drama (to soften us up), or a sign of forgetfulness, but as we could plainly see reading classes perched atop his head, he would invariably say: "children, children, can any of you see my glasses? Oh dear, I don't want to step on them. Oh my goodness, not another broken or lost pair." Mr. Davis then proceeded to whirl and turn, furtively looking for his glasses while refusing to take ambitious steps. After a few head snaps, his glasses would sail through the air, and land somewhere on forgiving carpet within six feet of his feet. After making eye contact with his beloved spectacles, he would then exclaim: "there they are! Goodness, children, why didn't you tell me?" This doubled us over in laughter each time. I have other memories of words from Mr. Davis swirling in my brain right now. Like the time I flew past him on Highway 34 while driving at ridiculous speed, only to meet him later at the first light in Hawkesbury ("Joel - I know it's fun to drive fast, but, as you can see, we got here at the same time. Did you really need to risk life and limb, and waste all that gas?"). Or his supportive, fun-loving manner prior to (and during) our drama performances. I remember moments when we had careened off script for long sequences, and all I could see backstage was his broad smile. "Improv your way out, Joel", he used to say, "someone is bound to remember a line. You'll get on track soon enough." What a contrast to the hyper-sensistive, perfectionistic, and structured world in which we live. What mattered to Mr. Davis was having fun, overcoming challenges together, and growing as a person. I remember these things every day as a teacher, a parent, and mindful person in uncertain times. Back in November 2014, my father mentioned he had seen Mr. Davis while volunteering at Hawkesbury General Hospital. Despite his ailing health, he had asked after me, dad said, and wondered what I was doing. I asked dad to pass along a copy of my book on recent social activism, knowing Mr. Davis was a proud union activist in his teaching days. I now regret never being able to get his reaction to what I wrote in person. What I do remember, however, are the words I wrote for the book's inscription, which when something like this: "For Mr. Davis: believe it or not, but this book was written by the same hormone-addled teenager you once contended with in class." "Today I am also a teacher, and I will never forget how you used always humour, passion, and words to inspire others to reach their highest potential." "Thank you for helping me to be a more mindful and thoughtful person. Hugs, Joel"

Mr. Davis was one of favourite teachers of all time. He had the most incredible laugh and smile and made learning fun. I went to see him at his house, maybe a year ago, and he was exactly the same. I don't know what made me want to see him, but I am so glad I did. Such a handsome, special man, happy man. He made me laugh and I enjoyed our visit. My condolences to the family.

My deepest condolences for the passing of Ken. I have fond memories of Ken who had the brightest smile north of the border (just pick a latitiude). Through shared battles with life, we had a chance to experience the source of our spiritual foundation and the promises of a human life. Peace and blessings.
