DEATH NOTICE
Former Boston Bruin and Toronto Maple Leafs star passed away peacefully October 19, 2015 at the age of 86. He was surrounded by his family and special friends in his final days.
He was the son of the late John Ambrose (Jack) Mackell (two Stanley cups with Ottawa Senators 1920 and 1921) and the late Margaret Fleming. Fleming is survived by his children Rosemary, Kathy (John), Michael, Joanne, Maureen, Sheilagh, Fleming Jr. and the mother of his children, Kathleen Grigg; his grandchildren Noah, Clara, Hannah, Addie, Gabriel, Jennifer, Maggie and Emilie; special friends Sandra, J.P., Kerry, Mario and Joyce. He was predeceased by his son Sean. A special thanks to the medical staff of the ICU at Hawkesbury General Hospital.
Fleming was a fierce competitor. In his thirteen year NHL career (3 with Toronto) (10 with Boston), he won two Stanley cups with the Leafs (1949 and 1951) and was named first team center all Star in the 1952-1953 season with the Bruins. He was the youngest player to play in an NHL all-star team at 18 in his rookie season with Toronto. He held many playoff records for points and assists. Best known for his speed, stickhandling and penalty killing, he created excitement on the ice and was nicknamed the ‘‘Sparkplug’’. Following his NHL career, he brought hockey excitement to the Maritimes both as a player and a coach. After hockey, he had a successful career in the automotive business and devoted spare time teaching hockey to special needs students and promoting fitness among youth in local schools.
Funeral arrangements entrusted to Berthiaume Family Funeral Home 416, McGill St, Hawkesbury, Ontario (877) 632-8511.
